Daffodil International University Observes International Mother Language Day

Daffodil International University (DIU) observed Amar Ekushey—the Shaheed Dibash (Martyrs’ Day) and International Mother Language Day—on Friday with due reverence at the Daffodil Smart City campus. Faculty members, officials, and students paid tribute to the language martyrs by placing floral wreaths at the university's Central Shaheed Minar.

Led by Professor Dr. M. Shamsul Alam, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, the observance began with a moment of silence, followed by the laying of wreaths at the Shaheed Minar. The university's Proctor, Professor Sheikh Mohammad Allaiyar, along with other senior officials, was also present during the tribute.

In the early hours of the day (12:30 AM), a student rally led by Professor Dr. Syed Mizanur Rahman, Director of External Affairs, marched towards the Central Shaheed Minar in Shahbagh, where they paid homage to the martyrs of the historic Language Movement by placing floral wreaths at the monument.

The university campus also hosted a variety of events organized by different student clubs under the theme “Chetonay Ekushey” (Spirit of Ekushey), which included discussions, poetry recitations, art competitions, and cultural performances to honor the significance of the day.

During the event, speakers urged students to uphold the sanctity of the Bangla language by practicing correct spelling, pronunciation, and usage. They emphasized the importance of preserving the dignity of the mother tongue while fostering a deep emotional connection to it.

“The Bengali nation holds the unique distinction of having sacrificed lives to protect the honor of their mother language. It is due to this unparalleled sacrifice that February 21 has been internationally recognized as International Mother Language Day, bringing pride to our nation,” said one of the speakers.

They further stressed, “We must be the foremost in respecting our mother tongue so that people from other countries and linguistic communities are inspired to do the same.”
