Mercedes-Benz and NVIDIA Extend Partnership to Develop Autonomous Driving Technology
Mercedes-Benz, the leading automaker that became the first to receive official approval to introduce Level 3 autonomous driving technology in Europe, and technology giant NVIDIA have announced an extension of their strategic partnership.
The two companies have decided to continue working together primarily to develop more advanced, next-generation autonomous driving systems.
Previously, the companies successfully collaborated to develop Mercedes-Benz's “Drive Pilot” technology, which enables vehicles to travel at speeds of up to 95 kilometres per hour on certain motorways.
Combining Technologies to Achieve Level 4 Autonomous Driving
Under the new agreement, Mercedes-Benz will contribute its long-standing expertise in automotive safety and engineering, while NVIDIA will provide comprehensive technological support.
The collaboration will incorporate NVIDIA's Hyperion in-vehicle computing and sensor architecture, its AI-powered Alpamayo driving software stack, and its Halos system designed to support safety and establish protective guardrails.
The primary objective of both companies is to develop an SAE Level 4 autonomous driving system capable of operating independently without human intervention under specific operating conditions and making rapid decisions in a wide range of situations.
Level 4 technology represents the stage immediately below Level 5, which aims to achieve fully autonomous driving without the need for human control.
Deeper Integration of Operating Systems
The collaboration between Mercedes-Benz and NVIDIA will extend beyond driving software. The two companies also plan to establish deeper integration between Mercedes-Benz's proprietary MB.OS operating system and NVIDIA's Hyperion system.
By harnessing artificial intelligence more effectively and prioritising the highest possible standards of road safety, the two companies aim to bring a new wave of innovation to the autonomous vehicle industry.
