YouTube Plans to Add Audiobooks to Its Premium Subscription Service
YouTube, the popular video streaming platform, is reportedly planning to introduce audiobook access as part of its subscription service. According to a report by the influential US publication The Wall Street Journal, YouTube is holding discussions with several leading publishing companies about the initiative.
An official announcement regarding the new service could come next year. However, Google has not yet issued any official comment on the matter.
A Different Approach from Google Play Store
Google has been offering audiobook purchases through the Google Play Store since 2018. However, users have had to purchase each audiobook individually, with no subscription or bundled package option available.
According to The Wall Street Journal, YouTube is taking a different approach by integrating audiobooks directly into its ad-free Premium subscription plan. This would allow subscribers to enjoy their preferred audiobooks as part of their existing Premium package for a fixed monthly fee, without paying additional charges for each title.
Market Competition and Previous Initiatives
Analysts believe the new feature could help counter the negative impact of recent increases in Premium subscription prices on customer sentiment.
The addition could also make the standard Premium plan more attractive to users than the comparatively affordable Premium Lite package.
In 2023, Google introduced podcast services on YouTube Music, enabling Premium subscribers to listen without advertisements, both online and offline. Adding audiobooks could further expand YouTube's range of entertainment and informational content, strengthening its position as a comprehensive digital media platform.
