Platform Fails To Respond To Ultimatum Over Commissions And Charges
Restaurant Owners In Chattogram Extend Foodpanda Boycott
- Restaurant operators protest escalating operational overheads driven by high commissions
- General Secretary Monzurul Huq announces decision at Barcode Food Junction briefing
- Association cautions tougher industrial actions if delivery fees remain unreviewed
Citing unsustainable operational friction caused by exorbitant commission structures, hidden platform fees, and unilateral commercial guidelines, the Bangladesh Restaurant Owners Association (Chattogram City Chapter) has formally announced the extension of its boycott against online delivery platform Foodpanda. The trade body reaffirmed its stance after an ultimatum served to the aggregator expired on Thursday, 15 October 2026, without resolving the grievances.
The announcement was delivered by the association's General Secretary, Monzurul Huq, during a press conference hosted at the Barcode Food Junction restaurant in Chattogram.
Addressing media representatives, restaurant proprietors alleged that steep merchant commissions alongside secondary operational levies are squeezing operating margins across the food and beverage ecosystem. While aggregators expand consumer access, operators noted that deductions and payment withholdings reduce net profitability to critical thresholds, indirectly escalating retail prices for end consumers. The trade leadership demanded a comprehensive audit and structural restructuring of existing commission tiers to ensure an equitable commercial operating environment.
Earlier on 2 October, the association had staged an initial suspension of Foodpanda order dispatch services across dining establishments starting from 5 October, issuing a deadline until 15 October for corporate intervention.
Reiterating their collective position, the leadership stated that the suspension of Foodpanda fulfillment channels will persist across all member restaurants in Chattogram until a transparent, negotiated settlement is achieved. The association warned that failure to establish fair commission frameworks could trigger more stringent countermeasures across regional commercial dining establishments, official sources confirmed.
