Commerce Ministry directs new preparations and formation of 7-member committee.
Ministry Cancels Announced BASIS Election Schedule
- Ministry of Commerce has canceled the BASIS election schedule for the 2026–2028 term to ensure transparency.
- A 7-member support committee will be formed to review and update the voters' list before announcing a new schedule.
- The directive came on September 3, right after the final candidate list was published on September 2.
In a significant development for Bangladesh's software engineering and IT service ecosystem, the Ministry of Commerce has officially canceled the previously announced election schedule for the 2026–2028 Board of Directors at the Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS).
A office memorandum issued on Thursday, September 3, signed by Deputy Secretary Chowdhury Samia Yasmin of the Commerce Organization-2 branch, formally revoked the schedule declared on June 30, 2026. The ministry mandated the formation of a 7-member support committee comprising BASIS members to verify, update, and include legitimate tech-firm members in the official voting database.
According to insights published by DigiBanglaTech.news, the directive arrived immediately after the Election Board published the third refined candidate list on Wednesday, September 2. Despite the publication of final candidates, widespread industry concerns regarding voters' list accuracy and representation led to the intervention by the ministry to secure a fair and competitive election.
Industry stakeholders noted that cleaning up the membership database via the support committee will re-establish trust within the ICT ecosystem before the revised election timeline is officially announced.
