Campaign, olympiad, research conference and genomics workshop planned
JUST Hosts Month-Long Microbiology Day Programme
- Antibiotic resistance awareness campaign launched across Jashore.
- Olympiad, research exhibition and national microbiology conference planned.
- Hands-on advanced microscopy and molecular techniques workshop scheduled.
The Department of Microbiology (MB) of Jashore University of Science and Technology (JUST) has launched a month-long programme to mark International Microorganism Day 2026.
The programme will focus on public health, antibiotic resistance, biological research and modern research techniques through a series of activities throughout September.
The month-long programme was formally inaugurated on September 1, 2026, with the launch of an awareness campaign on antibiotic resistance.
At the opening, MB Department Chairman Dr Selina Akter handed an awareness leaflet to JUST Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Iarul Kabir.
JUST Treasurer Dr Mohammad Faruk Hasan, celebration committee convener Dr Abinu Kibria Islam, along with other teachers and students of the department, were present.
Following the inauguration, students distributed awareness leaflets across different university offices and departments.
In his inaugural remarks, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Iarul Kabir welcomed the initiative and said, “The month-long initiative of the Department of Microbiology is highly commendable and timely in raising public awareness about antibiotic resistance for protecting public health and encouraging the new generation to engage in scientific research. I hope this programme will have a positive impact on students and the general public.”
He also expressed his best wishes for the overall success of all the programmes planned throughout the month.
Antibiotic resistance awareness campaign
With overall support from the Bangladesh Society of Microbiology (BSM) and the JUST Microbiology Club, an antibiotic resistance awareness campaign will be conducted among local residents of Jashore from September 1 to 15.
The campaign will focus on raising awareness about antibiotic resistance and encouraging greater understanding of the risks associated with inappropriate antibiotic use.
A Microbiology Olympiad has also been organised for students of local schools and colleges.
Research and innovation exhibition
A procession and special exhibition will be held on September 19 to mark International Microorganism Day.
The exhibition will showcase various research projects, innovations and achievements of the Department of Microbiology to the general public.
The initiative will provide an opportunity to highlight the practical applications of microbiology research and its importance in public health and other fields.
National conference on emerging research
As part of the programme, the second national conference, ‘NEXTGEN MICROBIOLOGY II’, will be held on September 26.
Renowned scientists from Bangladesh will discuss new research, emerging ideas and innovations in biological sciences at the conference.
The event will provide a platform for researchers and scientists to exchange views on new research concepts, findings and future opportunities in microbiology and biological sciences.
Hands-on genomics and molecular techniques workshop
The month-long programme will conclude with a special workshop titled ‘Advanced Microscopy and Advanced Molecular Techniques’, scheduled for September 27 to 30 with support from the university’s Genome Centre.
Participants will have the opportunity to receive hands-on training in advanced microscopy and molecular research techniques.
By combining antibiotic-resistance awareness, a student olympiad, a research exhibition, a national conference and practical research training, the month-long initiative is designed to create a broader platform for students, researchers and the public to engage with microbiology and its applications.
