Xiaomi, the world’s third-largest smartphone manufacturer, has announced plans to launch a new version of its in-house processor, the ‘XRing O3’. The Chinese technology giant is taking the step to reduce its dependence on third-party chip suppliers and strengthen its own supply chain.

The move signals Xiaomi’s ambition to further consolidate its position alongside global rivals such as Apple, Samsung and Huawei.

The new chip will serve as the successor to the company’s first in-house processor, the ‘XRing O1’, which entered the market last year.

Production Using TSMC Technology and Target

According to several sources familiar with the matter, chip manufacturer TSMC will produce Xiaomi’s new processor using its advanced 3-nanometre manufacturing technology. The new ‘XRing O3’ processor is reportedly planned for use in Xiaomi’s upcoming flagship foldable smartphone.

Initially, Xiaomi is targeting the release of between 200,000 and 300,000 smartphones powered by the new processor. The initiative is primarily aimed at challenging the dominance of Chinese rival Huawei in the premium foldable smartphone market.

Market Challenges and Future Plans

Rising prices of memory and various components have increased smartphone production costs worldwide, contributing to a slowdown in the global mobile market. In this challenging environment, Xiaomi considers reducing its dependence on chip suppliers such as Qualcomm and MediaTek to be particularly important for commercial security.

In addition to its main mobile processor, Xiaomi has also commissioned TSMC to manufacture the 6-nanometre ‘XRing O100’ chip for running its artificial intelligence ‘MiMo’ model and the 3-nanometre ‘XRing D100’ chip for autonomous-driving technology.

The new chips are expected to be ready for final deployment by next year.
