With a colorful rally, reception of new students with flowers and crests, farewell reception of outgoing students with flowers and crests, cultural programs, and various other arrangements, the Climate and Disaster Management (CDM) Department of Jashore University of Science and Technology (JUST) organized a reception for new students and a farewell ceremony for outgoing students.
The event was held on Saturday, April 4, at the Professor Mohammad Sharif Hossain Gallery of the National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam Academic Building of the university, organized by the CDM Department. Vice-Chancellor of JUST, Professor Dr. Md. Abdul Majid, attended the event as the chief guest. Special guests included Professor Dr. Shirin Nigar, Chairman of the Nutrition and Food Technology (NFT) Department, and Professor Dr. Mrityunjoy Biswas, Chairman of the Food Engineering (FE) Department.
In his speech as the chief guest, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Abdul Majid said that due to its geographical location, low-lying deltaic topography, and the impacts of climate change, Bangladesh is one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world. He noted that natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, storm surges, and cyclones occur frequently in the country. Addressing the students of the department, he expressed hope that through new ideas, knowledge, and research, they would enable people to better prepare for and respond to such disasters. He emphasized the need for students to become more research-oriented and to utilize time effectively in building their careers while contributing to national development. He also expressed optimism that their research would help both the country and the world advance further in disaster management.
The program was chaired by Professor Dr. Mohammad Mahfuzur Rahman, Chairman of the CDM Department. Among others, Professor Dr. Shirin Nigar (Chairman, NFT Department), Professor Dr. Mrityunjoy Biswas (Chairman, FE Department), Assistant Professor Hasan Md. Navid Anjum of the CDM Department, and students Smriti Sarker, Snigdha Sharmin, Rifat Hossain, Atikur Rahman, Tithi Rani Biswas, and Arannya delivered speeches.
Assistant Professor Nafisa Nuri Islam and Lecturer Muhammad Abu Sayed, along with teachers and students of the department, were present at the event. The event was conducted by CDM students Soumen Chowdhury Shubho and Anika Tabassum Orpi. A lively cultural program featuring performances by the department’s students was held in the evening.
