Data-Driven Drive Against Dhaka Muggers: DB Police Intensifies Action

In response to the alarming rise in mugging incidents in the capital, the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB) Police is identifying various criminal syndicates through data analysis, according to Mohammad Nasirul Islam, Joint Commissioner of DB Police.

He shared the update during a press conference held at the DMP Media Centre on Sunday (May 11). “We have identified several mugging gangs by analysing our criminal database. DB and local police stations are conducting raids in different parts of the capital to apprehend members of these groups,” said Mohammad Nasirul Islam.

Highlighting the success of recent operations, he stated that in anti-mugging drives over the last three months, 98 suspects were arrested in October, 148 in November, and 564 in December. Additionally, during the first eleven days of January alone, 374 more individuals were detained.

DB officials further reported that due to a surge in robbery cases across Dhaka and its surrounding districts, surveillance efforts have been significantly increased. Acting on confidential information, DB recently arrested seven members of a robbery gang, all of whom have multiple cases filed against them.

“From January of this year until now, DB has brought a total of 87 robbery suspects under the law. This has substantially curbed robberies in the Dhaka Metropolitan area and its nearby zones,” added Nasirul Islam.

He noted that during these operations, DB has uncovered several specialised inter-district robbery rings operating across Bangladesh, primarily targeting gold shops. “Our initial findings show that these groups conduct reconnaissance prior to committing robberies and use firearms and explosives during the incidents. As a result, DB has expanded its surveillance of their movements nationwide,” he concluded.
