Yaser Khan Choudhury Appointed Chairman of Bangladesh Sangbadik Kallyan Trust
Yaser Khan Choudhury, elected from Mymensingh-9 constituency in the 13th national parliamentary election and appointed as State Minister, has been nominated as the new Chairman of the Bangladesh Sangbadik Kallyan Trust (National Journalist Welfare Trust) by Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon. The nomination took place on Monday, 23 February 2026, at the Trust's 39th Board meeting held at Circuit House Road, Dhaka. During the meeting, the Minister instructed that a comprehensive database of beneficiaries and potential beneficiaries be created to make the Trust's support activities more organised and transparent.
Alongside Information and Broadcasting State Minister Yaser Khan Chowdhury, other members present at the meeting included the Trust's Vice Chairman Secretary Mahbuba Farzana, Member Principal Information Officer Md. Nizamul Kabir, and Member Director General of the Press Institute of Bangladesh Faruque Wasif.
During the meeting, the newly appointed Minister and State Minister were briefed on various information, challenges, and future plans related to the Trust's activities by the Managing Director of the Trust, Muhammad Abdullah. He also requested that the Trust's funds deposited in the bank be made tax-free in accordance with regulations to overcome the Trust's financial crisis. Furthermore, Managing Director Muhammad Abdullah sought the Ministry's cooperation regarding the Trust's recruitment of manpower, provision of transport facilities, and construction of its own building.
Listening to these matters, Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon stated that initiatives would be taken to provide pensions to journalists as per the BNP's election pledge. In response to the demands of the board members, he also informed them that special arrangements for medical facilities for journalists would be made in a major government hospital to ensure their proper healthcare.
Notably, the Trust's newly appointed Chairman, Yaser Khan Chowdhury, is the only son of former Member of Parliament Anwarul Hossain Khan Chowdhury. After receiving higher education from London, he worked in the information technology department of the BBC Television Network in London with efficiency and held important responsibilities for a long time.
