A scuffle broke out between two lecturers at PSTU

A public scuffle occurred between Professor Mohammad Shahbubul Alam, Chairman of the Department of General Animal Science and Animal Nutrition of the Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine Faculty at Patuakhali Science and Technology University (PSTU), and the university's Proctor, Professor Dr. Ali Azgar, over the combined degree issue. However, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Dr. S. M. Hemayet Jahan, stated that both lecturers resolved the matter amongst themselves without delay following this unfortunate incident.

Previously, on Monday, 23rd February, a scuffle broke out between the two lecturers in front of Academic Building-2 of the ANSVM Faculty of the university, in front of students protesting over the combined degree issue.

It is known that, in light of the court ruling regarding the combined degree, the teachers of the Animal Husbandry (AH) discipline decided not to hold classes or examinations for the Level-4 Semester-1 and Level-1 Semester-2 students of the faculty. In response, the students besieged the Dean's office and submitted a written application to the Dean requesting that the exams be held.

Subsequently, the agitated students moved towards Academic Building-2 and took up position in the central field of the faculty. In response to the students' intense anger, the AH discipline teachers gathered in front of the Academic Building and informed the University Proctor and the Dean about the matter. Subsequently, the Dean of the Faculty, Professor Dr. Khondokar Jahangir Alam, and Assistant Proctor Professor Dr. Ali Azgar, appeared at the scene in front of the teachers.

During this time, a heated argument occurred between Professor Mohammad Shahbubul Alam, Chairman of the Department of General Animal Science and Animal Nutrition, and Professor Dr. Ali Azgar, the university proctor, in front of all the students and teachers present. At one point, the matter escalated into a physical altercation.

In a statement regarding the incident, Professor Mohammad Shahbubul Alam, Chairman of the Department of General Animal Science and Animal Nutrition, said that some students came to lock the academic building while teachers were inside. Subsequently, he phoned the assistant proctor, but was unable to reach him. After phoning the Dean, they arrived, and he had a verbal dispute with the assistant proctor. However, they later resolved the matter.

Assistant Proctor Professor Dr. Ali Azgar stated that they were speaking with combined degree students in the Dean's office. A few students went from the Dean's office towards the academic building. When one of them mentioned locking it, Professor Shahbubul phoned him. He was busy and unable to answer the phone. Upon arriving at the scene, Professor Shahbubul spoke to him in a raised voice, and he also became somewhat agitated. Later, Professor Shahbubul publicly apologised to him.
