Inter-Ministerial Meeting Mulls Telecom Law Modernization

An inter-ministerial meeting convened on Thursday, 27 November, at the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications to discuss amendments to the telecommunications law, aiming to repeal the 2001 act and implement a new legal framework.

The session was chaired by Faiz Ahmed Taiyeb, Special Assistant in charge of the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications, and Information Technology. Present at the meeting were Secretary of Posts and Telecommunications Abdun Naser Khan along with representatives from various departmental agencies.

According to sources, the meeting focused on provisions in the new telecommunications law to restrict internet shutdowns, reduce administrative red tape, empower the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) with full authority, and foster an investment-friendly environment. Discussions also covered legal frameworks concerning digital security, data protection, and oversight mechanisms.
