The government will reduce the number of SIM cards that can be registered under a single individual’s name to a maximum of ten before the upcoming national election, Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd.) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has announced.

Speaking to reporters after the 15th meeting of the Advisory Council Committee on Law and Order on Sunday afternoon, October 26, the Home Affairs Adviser said, “Criminals often commit crimes using SIM cards registered under other people’s names. As a result, the actual offenders often evade arrest. To address this issue, the number of SIM cards registered per individual will be reduced. It has been found that in many cases, the SIM used in a crime does not belong to the perpetrator. Therefore, the number of SIM cards per person will be limited before the election.”

He further stated, “We are working to ensure that before the national election, an individual can register a maximum of seven SIM cards using their National ID.”

Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs Nasimul Ghani, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam, Director General of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Major General Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui, and Major General Abdul Motaleb Sajjad Mahmud were also present at the briefing.
