TikTok Permanently Suspends Promotional Account for Alex Gibney's Elon Musk Documentary
A highly discussed four-hour documentary about technology entrepreneur Elon Musk has encountered significant obstacles in its promotion across social media platforms. TikTok, the popular video-sharing platform, has permanently suspended the promotional account for Musk, a documentary directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney.
According to a report by The Hollywood Reporter, TikTok informed the film's distributor, Bleecker Street, that the decision was based on alleged violations of its policies on political content.
Other Platforms and Ownership Connections
Meta and YouTube had previously rejected advertisements or trailers for the documentary during the initial stages of its promotion. Meta subsequently described the rejections as an “initial error or technical glitch” and allowed the advertisements to run.
Meanwhile, X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, has consistently refused from the outset to run any advertisements for the documentary.
Analysts point out that Larry Ellison, a well-known supporter of US President Donald Trump, has an ownership stake in TikTok's US operations. This has drawn attention because of the political affiliations associated with both Ellison and Musk. Meanwhile, plans for the documentary's international distribution through Universal Pictures had also faced some initial uncertainty.
From Theatres to Streaming Platforms
After opening last week in a limited release across just four cinemas, Musk is now expanding its theatrical distribution.
Under an agreement, the documentary is expected to become available on the popular streaming platform HBO next year. Notably, HBO currently operates under Paramount Skydance, with Larry Ellison's son, David Ellison, leading the organisation.
Amid speculation about political influence and complex business relationships, the documentary's global distribution has become a major topic of discussion across the film and technology industries.
