Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) plans to modernise urban waste management by introducing technology-driven equipment, including compactor dump trucks, road-cleaning vehicles and specialised drain-cleaning vehicles. The initiative aims to improve waste collection, transportation and disposal while strengthening the city’s capacity to keep roads, drains and public spaces clean.

Mayor Dr Shahadat Hossain disclosed the plan at a meeting with officials of the corporation’s cleaning department on Sunday, October 18.

He said modernising waste management is essential to making Chattogram a clean, modern and liveable city. Cleaning operations must become more efficient to meet the needs of the city’s growing population and rising volume of waste. He stressed the need to supplement existing systems with modern, technology-based equipment.

The mayor said advanced machinery and modern waste-transport equipment would improve collection, transportation and disposal. Compactor dump trucks would support waste transportation, road-cleaning vehicles would help clean streets, and specialised vehicles would improve drain-cleaning capacity.

The initiatives are expected to make cleaning operations across roads, drains and public spaces more efficient.

Digital Tools for Better Civic Services

Emphasising technology in public service delivery, the mayor said CCC must move towards digital management to make its services easier, faster and more accountable.

The “Amar Chattogram” app has already been launched. Such initiatives can strengthen communication between residents and the city corporation and help address civic problems more effectively.

The mayor also stressed that keeping the city clean is not the responsibility of the corporation alone. Public awareness and cooperation are essential. Residents should dispose of waste at designated locations rather than dumping it indiscriminately.

Officials and employees involved in cleaning operations must also carry out their duties responsibly.

Addressing cleaning department officials, Shahadat Hossain called for greater commitment, dedication and professionalism to meet residents’ expectations. He stressed avoiding unnecessary delays in waste removal, ensuring regular supervision and improving coordination among field teams.

He said success depends not only on making plans but also on implementing them and ensuring that residents benefit from the results.

The mayor said sustainable and effective waste management in Chattogram could be achieved through modern technology, responsible performance by officials and employees, and cooperation from residents.

Those attending the meeting included CCC Acting Chief Executive Officer and Secretary Mohammad Ashraful Amin, Chief Cleaning Officer Captain Shamim Mohammad Khan, Chief Executive Engineer Anisul Islam and other officials concerned with the cleaning department.
