Body Urges Return To Classes And Recommends High-Powered Ministry Committee
CUET Concludes Online Syndicate With Six Members
- Syndicate conveys profound concern over severe academic disruptions and session jam risks
Amidst the ongoing institutional impasse at Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET), newly appointed Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sheikh Shariful Alam held an emergency online syndicate meeting on Friday evening, 16 October 2026, attended by only six members. The syndicate resolved to issue an immediate call for all stakeholders to return to classroom instruction and recommended that the Ministry of Education constitute an impartial, high-powered inquiry and advisory committee to formulate a sustainable resolution .
According to the official agenda and adopted resolutions of the meeting, the syndicate expressed grave apprehension regarding the disruption to students' academic journeys and the looming risk of acute session jams . The body urged students, faculty, officers, and staff to adopt a constructive and responsible approach to immediately resume regular curricular activities . To rebuild mutual trust and restore campus normalcy, the syndicate unanimously approved organizing coordinated dialogue sessions involving university authorities, local public representatives, and all relevant campus stakeholders . Furthermore, the council resolved to formally request the Ministry of Education to form a high-powered committee tasked with assessing the perspectives of all concerned parties and submitting long-term policy recommendations .
Institutional records indicate that within the 17-member statutory body, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor seat remains vacant. Among the remaining members, no internal faculty representatives from CUET joined the virtual proceeding alongside the vice-chancellor. External syndicate member and Jahangirnagar University Professor Jahidur Rahman confirmed the absence of internal teachers. Other members cited approved leaves or personal commitments for their non-attendance. Additionally, In-charge Registrar Prof. Sheikh Mohammad Humayun Kabir, who serves as the Syndicate Secretary ex-officio, abstained after asserting that he had already stepped down from his administrative post.
The standoff traces back to 21 September, when the Ministry of Education replaced incumbent Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Abu Sadat Muhammad Sayem with Prof. Sheikh Shariful Alam. Protesting the decision, general students enforced an ongoing "complete shutdown" on 22 September demanding Prof. Sayem's reinstatement, accompanied by concurrent work stoppages by teachers, officers, and staff associations. The virtual session followed the vice-chancellor's 30-hour confinement on campus, which ended on Tuesday through administrative intervention before he convened the syndicate from the Chattogram Circuit House, official sources confirmed.
