Segregation bins installed across 111 schools; initiative recovers over 35,000 tonnes of plastic
Unilever, CCC, and YPSA Drive Plastic Waste Awareness in Chattogram
- UBL, Chattogram City Corporation, and YPSA host interactive awareness session at Pahartali Girls' School & College.
- Over 35,000 tonnes of plastic waste collected and processed across 41 wards under the collaborative framework.
- 3,000 waste workers trained, 2,000 equipped with protective gear, and 1,827 enrolled in group insurance policies.
Fostering sustainable waste management behavior and promoting ecological responsibility among students, Unilever Bangladesh Limited (UBL), in strategic collaboration with Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) and Young Power in Social Action (YPSA), organized an awareness campaign at Pahartali Girls' School and College.
Addressing the session, UBL Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Ruhul Kuddus Khan outlined the detrimental environmental impacts of indiscriminate plastic disposal, emphasizing the imperative of source-level waste segregation. He urged the youth to spearhead community initiatives prioritizing plastic reduction, responsible disposal, and active participation in local recycling efforts.
Operational since 2022, this public-private-development sector partnership works to build a resilient circular plastics value chain within Chattogram. To date, the project has installed standardized three-tier color-coded waste segregation bins across 111 schools and madrasas, sensitizing over 11,500 students to source-segregation practices. Academic staff and student cohorts receive systematic training to advocate responsible plastic disposal across neighborhood households.
Beyond institutional education, the initiative drives large-scale municipal waste collection and formalizes the informal waste ecosystem across all 41 administrative wards of Chattogram. The consortium has recovered and diverted over 35,000 tonnes of post-consumer plastic waste from landfills and marine ecosystems. To reinforce occupational health and economic resilience, 3,000 waste workers and 220 scrap dealers have undergone capacity development in occupational safety and basic enterprise operations. Furthermore, nearly 2,000 workers received personal protective equipment (PPE), 1,827 individuals were enrolled under group insurance policies, and door-to-door outreach successfully onboarded approximately 28,000 urban households into source-segregation routines.
The event was attended by UBL Factory Director S. M. Tareq Saifullah, YPSA Founder and Chief Executive Dr. Md. Arifur Rahman, alongside administrative and institutional stakeholders.
