SUST Student Leader Suspended for Separate Banner Breach

Sylhet’s Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) Chhatra Dal Senior Vice President Md. Sohag has been temporarily relieved of his organizational post for holding programs under a separate banner. Sohag is a student of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department from the 2017–18 session.
The decision was approved by Central Chhatra Dal President Rakibul Islam Rakib and General Secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir, according to a statement issued on Saturday night, August 16, signed by the organization’s Central Office Secretary, Jahangir Alam.
The press release stated: “As per the decision of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s Chhatra Dal Central Committee, Md. Sohag, Senior Vice President of SUST Chhatra Dal, has been temporarily relieved of his organizational post for violating organizational discipline by conducting programs under a separate banner. The decision was approved by Chhatra Dal President Rakibul Islam Rakib and General Secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir. Leaders and activists of all levels have been instructed to refrain from maintaining any organizational ties with him.”
Commenting on the matter, SUST Chhatra Dal President Rahat Zaman said, “He (Sohag) violated organizational discipline by conducting programs under a separate banner. That is why the central leadership made this decision. In such a large organization, separate programs by any unit create a negative impression of the organization.”
Similarly, SUST Chhatra Dal General Secretary Naim Sarkar stated, “He (Md. Sohag) has long been conducting centrally declared programs separately. By doing so, he was defying party directives. For this reason, the central committee has temporarily relieved him of his post.”
In response, Md. Sohag said, “Many of those with them (the SUST Chhatra Dal leaders) were previously involved with the Chhatra League. That is why I organized activities under a separate banner. From now on, I will join everyone in conducting party programs together.”
