AMD-OpenAI Alliance Amplifies AI Ambitions
Global chipmaking giant AMD has announced a multi-year agreement to supply artificial intelligence (AI) chips to OpenAI, in a deal that is expected to generate hundreds of billions of dollars in revenue. As part of the agreement, OpenAI has also been offered the opportunity to purchase nearly 10% of AMD shares at a nominal price of just 1 cent, according to Reuters.
Following the announcement on Monday, AMD’s stock price surged by more than 34%, marking the company’s largest single-day gain in nine years. This spike boosted AMD’s market capitalization by approximately $80 billion.
Industry experts are calling the deal transformative for both companies. It is expected to accelerate the race to build next-generation AI technologies and meet the soaring demand for computing power in the AI sector.
Forest Norrod, Executive Vice President at AMD, told Reuters:
“This agreement is going to be transformational—not just for AMD, but for the entire industry.”
The partnership marks a significant shift in the competitive landscape of AI infrastructure, placing AMD in a stronger position to rival dominant players in the sector.
