OpenAI, which once shuttered its robotics division, has now relaunched the initiative with ambitious plans for developing advanced robots. Caitlin Kalinowski, the director of OpenAI’s hardware division, recently shared details about the company’s robotics plans via a post on the social media platform X. The announcement, coupled with new job postings, outlines OpenAI’s vision for its robotics team.

In her post on Friday, Kalinowski stated, “OpenAI will build its own robots equipped with cutting-edge sensor technology.”

The job listings highlight that OpenAI’s robotics team will focus on creating “general-purpose,” “adaptive,” and “versatile” robots capable of operating in “dynamic, real-world environments” with human-like intelligence. Additionally, the company plans to develop new sensors and institutionally advanced AI models to power these robots.

One job posting indicates that OpenAI may hire contract workers to test robotic prototypes, while another suggests that the robots might feature physical appendages.

According to a report by The Information, OpenAI is actively pursuing plans to build humanoid robots.

Beyond robotics, OpenAI is engaged in other hardware projects. Former Apple product designer Jony Ive confirmed last year that he is collaborating with OpenAI on a new device. The company is also working on designing a custom chip to enhance the performance of its AI models.
