Fear of cyber extortion from FBI servers

More than 100,000 fake e-mails were sent on Saturday from an internal FBI server. The e-mail sent from the recipient's anonymous FBI domain (@ic.fbi.gov) caught the error and the damaged hardware was taken offline, the FBI said. The investigation of the incident has started. However, the company has already warned everyone against possible cyber-attacks. The FBI called the incident an "ongoing situation" and said anyone who received such mail should be careful. The source of the fake email was identified as US Homeland Security. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security claims that such a threat could occur. The non-profit organization Spamhouse says the e-mails are intended for recipients, targeting a "sensitive series of attacks" by an extortionist group called "Dark Overload." Spamhouse tweeted that they were causing a lot of disruption because the emails were actually coming from inside the FBI infrastructure.
