Demand for Effective Action Against Online Gambling
- Rising expansion of online gambling and betting platforms triggers deep concern across the country
- Authorities urge strict monitoring against the misuse of mobile financial accounts and SIM cards
- Consumer association raises six-point demand ensuring accountability of BTRC and mobile network operators
The Bangladesh Mobile Phone Consumers Association (BMPCA) has expressed deep concern over the alarming rise of online gambling and betting platforms in the country. Due to the misuse of technology and easy availability of digital payments, the youth and general public are facing severe financial and social risks. Although gambling is legally banned in Bangladesh, these illegal operations continue through foreign websites and mobile apps.
On Friday, July 17, 2026, a statement was issued urging effective coordination among BTRC, Bangladesh Bank, mobile financial service providers, and law enforcement agencies to combat online gambling.
BMPCA President Mohiuddin Ahmed stated, "Online gambling has increased alarmingly in the country due to the failure of the regulatory commission. BTRC cannot avoid this responsibility in any way. Yesterday, the police recovered about six thousand five hundred SIM cards. Mobile operators cannot evade responsibility for the indiscriminate sale of SIM cards."
He further added, "Technology is supposed to be used for human welfare. But the spread of online gambling proves that we must strengthen our control and supervision to prevent the misuse of technology. The accountability of all relevant institutions must be ensured to stop online gambling, and the pathways for illegal transactions and promotions must be completely shut down."
To address this crisis, the organization raised a six-point demand, including blocking gambling sites, stopping illegal financial transactions, and forming a permanent task force.
