The Bangladesh Police Headquarters has issued a strong warning regarding a fake AI-generated video circulating on social media that features the image and a cloned voice of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Baharul Alam. The statement, released on Tuesday, August 5, emphasized that such acts are punishable under existing laws.

In a press release, the Police Headquarters expressed concern over the circulation of the misleading video, which uses a still image of the IGP alongside an artificially cloned voice to spread false information.

The statement read, “A fabricated video statement has been published on social media using a still image of the Inspector General of Police. In the video, a misleading message is being circulated through voice cloning using artificial intelligence technology.”

The headquarters clarified that this act constitutes a punishable offense under current laws. “Such activities are considered punishable crimes under existing legal provisions. Necessary legal actions are currently underway against those responsible,” it added.

Authorities further confirmed that technological surveillance and investigative efforts are ongoing to identify and bring the culprits to justice.
