BPMCA Ballot Battle: Dispute Erupts Over Election Results

A section within the Bangladesh Private Medical College Association (BPMCA) has reportedly initiated a campaign to nullify the recently announced results of the association’s Executive Committee election for the 2025–2027 term. The election took place on July 16 at the CIRDAP auditorium in Dhaka, where two panels—Mohiuddin-Mukit and Afroza-Moazzem—contested. Out of 110 eligible voters, 92 cast their votes.

The election was conducted peacefully, with representatives from both contesting panels present during the process. Upon the conclusion of voting, results were announced in a transparent manner. From the Mohiuddin-Mukit panel, Dr. Sheikh Mohiuddin was elected President, and Dr. Abdus Sabur was elected as the Organizing Secretary. Meanwhile, the Afroza-Moazzem panel secured a majority, winning 19 posts including the position of General Secretary, which went to Dr. Moazzem Hossain.

Despite the peaceful and competitive nature of the election, the Afroza-Moazzem panel later submitted an appeal to challenge the results—an act deemed procedurally irregular by critics. The appeal was reportedly accepted by the appellate board at around 8:30 PM, well beyond the officially stipulated time limit.

Supporters of the existing results argue that the election was conducted fairly, as evidenced by media coverage and the signed draft result sheets endorsed by both panels’ appointed agents. The Afroza-Moazzem panel won the majority of positions, while the Mohiuddin-Mukit panel claimed only two major posts.

Now, concerns have arisen regarding attempts to overturn the democratic outcome of the election. Allegations suggest that a syndicate is working to invalidate the results and undermine voters’ rights. Stakeholders have expressed hope that the appeal—described as untimely and unauthorized—will be dismissed through proper legal channels, upholding the integrity of the voters’ mandate.
