TikTok Talks to Resume as Trump Signals Progress on China Deal

The United States will begin discussions with China over a TikTok agreement on Monday or Tuesday, President Donald Trump announced on Friday, July 5. Speaking to reporters, Trump said the U.S. is "very close to a deal" regarding the sale of TikTok.

The deadline for Chinese tech giant ByteDance to sell TikTok's U.S. assets had previously been extended to September 17. Earlier this year, plans to establish a separate American entity for TikTok’s U.S. operations were suspended following objections from China.

Trump stated that the potential deal would be beneficial for China as well, noting, “My relationship with President Xi Jinping is very good.” However, he acknowledged that the outcome of the negotiations is not guaranteed. “China will have to approve the deal,” Trump added, emphasizing that the agreement’s implementation would require Beijing’s consent.
