Nuclear Fuel Reaches Project Site
Marking a major milestone in Bangladesh's transition toward nuclear power, the first shipment of enriched uranium fuel for Unit 2 of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP) has safely arrived at the project site in Pabna.
Escorted by specialized security forces, the nuclear transport convoy entered the plant complex on Wednesday (October 21, 2026) at 10:05 AM. Bangladeshi nuclear scientists and engineers from Russia’s State Atomic Energy Corporation, Rosatom, formally received the consignment.
Earlier on October 2, 2026, the consignment arrived at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport via a special Russian cargo aircraft. According to project officials, the shipment was originally scheduled for September 24 but faced delay after failing to obtain transit clearance to fly through Pakistani airspace. The flight path was subsequently revised to ensure safe delivery.
Under Rosatom’s contractual delivery schedule, 9 cargo flights are planned between October and December 2026. These airlifts will transport 48 additional fuel assemblies for Unit 1 alongside 163 fuel assemblies required for Unit 2.
Simultaneously, commissioning activities for Unit 1—equipped with advanced Generation III+ VVER-1200 reactors—achieved a key safety milestone after successfully completing the 16 MPa high-pressure safety valve test. Once both 1,200 MW units achieve commercial operation, the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant will inject 2,400 MW of zero-carbon baseload electricity into the national power grid.
