Five Day Bank Holiday Drives Digital Fintech Adoption
Surge in POS and QR Payments
- Banks and stock exchanges remain closed for 5 consecutive days from Oct 20 to 24
-
With commercial banks, financial institutions, and capital markets (DSE & CSE) closed for a five-day extended break from Tuesday (October 20, 2026) to Saturday (October 24, 2026) due to Durga Puja and weekend holidays, consumer behavior is shifting rapidly toward digital payment ecosystems. To bypass long queues and potential cash crunches at Automated Teller Machine (ATM) booths, citizens are increasingly utilizing Point of Sale (POS) terminals at superstores and scanning 'Bangla QR' codes for retail purchases.
The long holiday follows the Ministry of Public Administration's circular declaring public holidays from October 20-22, coupled with regular weekend closures on October 23-24. Although banks operated on Saturday (October 17) to clear pending transactions, the sudden spike in festive consumption has driven millions toward cashless payment alternatives.
Sharing his experience at a Dhanmondi ATM booth, corporate employee Tanvir Ahmed remarked, "Seeing long queues at the cash counter, I switched entirely to card payments at POS machines in superstores. It is faster, safer, and completely hassle-free during long holidays."
Similarly, Md. Shafiqul Islam, a fashion retailer at Dhaka's New Market, highlighted the efficiency of QR payments. "Handling physical cash during 5-day bank holidays creates liquidity issues. With Bangla QR displayed on our counters, customers scan and pay instantly via mobile banking apps, depositing funds directly into our merchant accounts."
Ripon Hossain, a grocery retailer in rural Kushtia, added, "Even with physical branches closed, QR-based digital payments allow us to settle supplier invoices remotely via digital banking without holding physical paper currency."
According to latest data from Bangladesh Bank, active debit, credit, and prepaid card issuances surged to 52.9 million by late 2026. Notably, 90.69% of domestic credit card volumes are processed through POS and e-commerce retail purchases rather than ATM cash withdrawals. Furthermore, transaction volumes via the unified 'Bangla QR' framework registered a monumental 104% growth year-on-year.
To ensure smooth financial operations, Bangladesh Bank has instructed all scheduled banks to maintain sufficient cash at ATMs while guaranteeing uninterrupted uptime for POS networks, internet banking, e-commerce payment gateways, and Mobile Financial Services (MFS). Meanwhile, limited banking operations will remain active at sea, land, and airports in coordination with customs and port authorities to facilitate essential import-export trade. //DBTech/BTRS/SME/MVNO//
