Google has officially renamed its AI-powered research assistant NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook, aligning the tool with the company's broader Gemini AI branding.

The rebranding took effect on July 16, although Gemini Notebook will continue to operate as a standalone service for now rather than being fully integrated into Google's other Gemini products.

Built-in coding and data analysis

Alongside the name change, Google has introduced several major backend upgrades, the most significant being the ability to write, run, and execute code directly inside notebooks.

The new capability enables users to perform complex data analysis using information they have collected within their research notebooks, eliminating the need to switch to external coding environments.

Integration with Google Search AI Mode

Google also announced that it will soon allow notebooks created in Gemini Notebook to be accessed directly from Google Search's AI Mode, making research projects more seamlessly connected with Google's AI-powered search experience.

Growing adoption

According to Google, Gemini Notebook is currently used by:

  • More than 30 million individual users worldwide.
  • Over 600,000 organizations.

Rebranding follows earlier integration plans

The name change was widely expected within the technology industry.

Back in April, Google announced plans to more closely integrate its AI-powered research tool with the core Gemini application, making the latest rebranding a natural step in the company's broader AI strategy.
