Tribunal Grants Five-Week Extension for Digital Evidence Submission in 2024 July Uprising Case
The prosecution in the July Uprising in 2024 human rights violation case has requested a new submission of digital evidence, prompting the International Crimes Tribunal to postpone the scheduled verdict. In response to this application, the tribunal has granted the prosecution five weeks to submit additional digital evidence or information.
The decision was announced on 4 March, Wednesday afternoon, by a three-member bench of International Crimes Tribunal-1, led by Chairman Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Majumdar.
Simultaneously, in the case concerning the shooting of one person and the killing of two others in Rampura, the tribunal set 9 April for the next hearing.
The other two members of the panel are Justice Md. Shafiul Alam Mahmud and Justice Md. Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury.
The prosecution was represented by Prosecutor Sheikh Mahdi during the hearing. Also present were Chief Prosecutor Aminul Islam, Prosecutor Mizanul Islam, Gazi MH Tamim, Tarek Abdullah, and other prosecutors.
On this day, the prosecution applied to postpone the verdict in order to submit new digital evidence, requesting four weeks for this purpose. Meanwhile, the defense was represented by lawyer Sarwar Jahan Nippon, who requested six weeks and also sought bail for the sole arrested accused, then-ASI Chanchal Chandra Sarkar of Rampura Police Outpost.
The defense lawyer stated to the tribunal, “My client has been in jail for 15 months. He has a child and is the only earning member of the family. Therefore, we request his bail.”
In response, the tribunal said that bail could not be granted at this stage as the case is in its final phase. Following this, the tribunal granted the prosecution five weeks to submit the new evidence and scheduled the next hearing for 9 April.
The absconding accused in this case are former Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Habibur Rahman, former ADC of Khilgaon Zone Md. Rashedul Islam, former OC of Rampura Police Station Md. Moshiur Rahman, and former SI of Rampura Police Station Tarikul Islam Bhuiya.
