Six Member Advisory Committee Announced
UGC Forms CUET Panel Without CUET Representation
- UGC forms 6-member panel with VCs from BUET, CU, and CVASU for CUET
- Exclusion of CUET faculty and stakeholders sparks validity questions over advisory body
- Panel tasked to recommend solutions restoring academic operations amidst ongoing shutdown
In a move to resolve the ongoing impasse at Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET), the University Grants Commission (UGC) has constituted a six-member advisory committee. However, the exclusion of any faculty member or administrative representative from CUET itself within the panel has sparked widespread discussion.
Formed on Monday (October 19, 2026) following directives from the Ministry of Education, the committee is led by UGC Member Professor Abdullah-Al-Mamun. UGC Additional Director Dr. Md. Mohibul Ahsan serves as the member secretary.
The remaining members of the high-powered panel include the Vice-Chancellors of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Chittagong University (CU), and Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (CVASU), alongside Additional Secretary (University Wing) of the Ministry of Education Md. Mahbubul Haq Patwary.
The primary objective of the committee is to evaluate the operational deadlock and submit strategic recommendations to resume physical lectures and campus governance.
The current crisis stems from the September 21 appointment of KUET Professor Sheikh Shariful Alam as the new Vice-Chancellor, triggering student-led shutdowns and faculty work abstentions. While the advisory body was initiated based on a recent emergency syndicate decision, CUET Teachers' Association Joint Secretary Samiun Basir questioned the panel's composition and operational scope without local representation.
