In an unprecedented international operation aimed at dismantling online fraud and financial scam networks, tech giants Meta, Microsoft, Coinbase, Starlink, and the United States Department of Justice have coordinated with international law enforcement agencies to disrupt a major Southeast Asia-based cybercrime syndicate. The operation targeted criminal networks involved in romance scams, cryptocurrency investment fraud known as “pig butchering,” and law-enforcement impersonation schemes that primarily victimized U.S. citizens.

Meta has long faced criticism for allowing scammers to operate across its platforms and for allegedly profiting from fraudulent advertising. This latest initiative marks one of the company's most significant collaborative efforts to combat organized cybercrime. According to participating organizations, the operation focused on criminal groups operating from scam compounds in countries such as Cambodia and Myanmar, where victims were often lured with fake job offers and forced to participate in large-scale online fraud operations.

Washington Summit and Intelligence Sharing

Beginning on May 18, senior representatives from Meta, Microsoft, Coinbase, Starlink, and the U.S. Department of Justice met in Washington, D.C., alongside the Royal Thai Police and law enforcement agencies from the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. The objective was to combine fragmented intelligence from multiple platforms and jurisdictions to identify the individuals and infrastructure behind the scams. Participants described the initiative as the first cross-industry operation of its kind involving major technology firms, financial platforms, and international law enforcement agencies.

Major Operational Results

The coordinated crackdown produced substantial results across multiple fronts:

  • Meta removed more than 1.4 million scam-related accounts, pages, and groups from Facebook and Instagram.
  • Microsoft suspended approximately 20,000 fraudulent accounts linked to scam operations.
  • Coinbase froze more than US$3 million worth of cryptocurrency associated with criminal networks.
  • Starlink disconnected thousands of satellite internet terminals identified as supporting unlawful scam activities.
  • International investigators identified additional previously unknown scam compounds and criminal networks for further enforcement action.
  • Law enforcement authorities have arrested 63 suspects connected to the scam syndicates.

Meta's Ongoing Anti-Scam Efforts

Meta said the latest operation builds on a broader anti-fraud campaign that has expanded significantly over the past year. The company has intensified efforts to identify scam advertisements, fraudulent accounts, and impersonation schemes. It has also introduced new AI-powered detection tools designed to identify accounts impersonating celebrities, brands, and public figures, while providing users with real-time warnings when suspicious interactions occur through Messenger and other services.

Technology analysts believe the operation represents a significant milestone in the global fight against cyber-enabled fraud. By combining platform intelligence, financial tracking, connectivity controls, and law-enforcement action, the participating organizations have demonstrated a new model for tackling large-scale online scam networks that operate across borders.
