The implementation of the National Equipment Identity Register (NEIR) in Bangladesh has been postponed from 16 December to 1 January.

The decision was taken to give mobile handset traders additional time to submit IMEI numbers and related information of previously imported but unsold or stockpiled mobile phones for inclusion in the NEIR system.

The information was disclosed in a press release issued by the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) on Monday, 15 December. The release requested all mobile phone traders to submit the required data by 31 December via email to [email protected], following the prescribed Microsoft Excel (.xlsx) format.

According to the press release, in preparation for the launch of the NEIR system, mobile phone traders had earlier been given time until 15 December to submit IMEI and related details of unsold or stored handsets imported previously. However, it was observed that many traders had not yet submitted the required information to the Commission.

To facilitate those traders, the authorities decided to shift the NEIR system launch date from 16 December to 1 January. Consequently, the deadline for submitting information to enable the integration of unsold or stockpiled handsets into the mobile network has been extended until 31 December.
