Japanese technology giant Panasonic has announced plans to develop high-capacity electric vehicle (EV) batteries within the next two years, a move seen as a major advancement in the sector. The company claims the technology will achieve “world-best capacity” by the end of 2027, Reuters reported.

In the new batteries, the anode will be eliminated during the production process. After the first charge, a lithium metal anode will form inside the battery, allowing for the use of more active cathode materials — nickel, cobalt, and aluminum. As a result, the energy density is expected to increase by about 25 percent. This could extend the driving range of Tesla’s popular Model Y by approximately 145 kilometers.

Panasonic stated that the technology could also enable the production of lighter and potentially cheaper batteries capable of covering the same distances. The company is additionally focusing on reducing nickel usage, though it has not disclosed details about production costs.

Several other global battery manufacturers are working on similar technologies.
