Robotic Rehabilitation Revolution: Bangladesh Embarks on a New Era in Healthcare

Bangladesh is stepping into a new era of modern technology-based rehabilitation medicine with the establishment of the country’s first Robotic Rehabilitation Center at the Super Specialized Hospital of Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) in Shahbagh, Dhaka.

The state-of-the-art center houses a total of 62 robots, 22 of which are powered by artificial intelligence (AI). These advanced robots are designed to deliver precise physiotherapy, neurological rehabilitation, and long-term treatment tailored to patients’ conditions, particularly those suffering from paralysis and chronic neurological disorders.

According to BMU authorities, as part of the preparatory phase, a team of seven biomedical engineers from China has already trained 27 physicians and physiotherapists. Once the trained personnel gain sufficient expertise and operational processes are successfully implemented, the center will significantly benefit patients undergoing complex rehabilitation for stroke, paralysis, neurological dysfunctions, chronic pain, nerve injuries, frozen shoulder, accident-related complications, and limb weakness.

The official inauguration of the center will take place on Sunday, August 31, in the morning. The event will be inaugurated by Health Advisor Noorjahan Begum, with Special Assistant to the Chief Advisor, Professor Dr. Md. Sayedur Rahman, and the Chinese Ambassador to Dhaka, Mr. Yao Wen, attending as special guests. The ceremony will be presided over by BMU Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. Shahinul Alam.

The Robotic Rehabilitation Center, established with Chinese technical assistance, had already commenced limited pilot operations on July 10. Sources confirmed that the Chinese government contributed robotic equipment worth approximately 20 crore taka as part of its donation to the project.

From a technological standpoint, this center is set to become one of the most advanced robotic rehabilitation facilities in South Asia, marking a groundbreaking milestone for Bangladesh’s healthcare sector.
