The Press Institute Bangladesh (PIB)’s fact-checking and media research unit, BanglaFact, has debunked recent reports claiming that members of the Mujibnagar Government have been stripped of their freedom fighter status.

According to BanglaFact’s investigative team, “On Tuesday night, June 3, the National Freedom Fighters Council (NFFC) issued an ordinance that revised the definition of a freedom fighter. Following this, several mainstream newspapers, online portals, and television channels published a number of inaccurate stories.”

“More than 50 reports were published under headlines such as ‘Recognition of over 400 leaders including Sheikh Mujib revoked’ and ‘All Mujibnagar Government leaders stripped of freedom fighter status,’” the team noted.

BanglaFact clarified the actual contents of the ordinance, stating, “The ordinance clearly specifies that ‘The Provisional Government of Bangladesh (Mujibnagar Government), and the forces recognized by that government, including naval commandos, Kilo Force, Ansar members, and the following citizens of Bangladesh, shall also be included as valiant freedom fighters.’”

“In other words, the claim that Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and members of the Mujibnagar Government have lost their freedom fighter status is false,” the report emphasized.

BanglaFact continues to play a critical role in combating misinformation, fake news, and disinformation in Bangladesh, aiming to ensure that the public receives accurate and verified information.
