SUST Summoned: UGC Seeks Clarification Over Unapproved Faculty Appointments

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has sought an explanation from Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) for allegedly appointing 17 teachers across various departments without obtaining prior approval. A letter issued on April 29 by Md. Jamal Uddin, Deputy Director of the UGC's Public University Management Division, gave the university 10 working days to respond.

The letter stated that complaints had been received regarding faculty recruitment carried out without the UGC’s approval. It noted that in the Bangla department, three teachers were reportedly recruited based on an advertisement without prior UGC consent. In the Anthropology department, three teachers were allegedly appointed against one approved position. Similarly, the Public Administration department reportedly appointed five teachers against a single sanctioned post, and six were recruited against three positions in the Forestry and Environmental Science department.

In response to the matter, SUST Pro-Vice Chancellor and Chair of the Lecturer Recruitment Board Md. Sajedul Karim told reporters, “The appointments have not yet been finalized by the Syndicate. And those that have been made followed due process. Faculty appointments are necessary based on departmental demands. We will respond to the UGC's letter within the stipulated time.”
