We recall the visionary tech entrepreneur SM Nazrul Islam

December 17 is the sixth anniversary of the demise of SM Nazrul Islam, founder chairman of Walton Group, the country's leading electronics, electrical and home appliances manufacturer and marketer. He passed away at the age of 93 on this day in 2017.

However, five years after his death, there was no news of any special ceremony to commemorate him this year. The Walton family is remembering this noble person with respect on the day through informal and institutional prayer programs.

SM Nazrul Islam, the visionary pioneer of Made in Bangladesh approach in Electronics industry, was born on May 7, 1928 in Gosai Zoair village of Tangail Sadar Upazila in a noble Muslim family. His father SM Atahar Ali Talukdar was a petty trader. He started the contracting business with his father. In 1977, his eldest son SM Nurul Alam Rezvi founded a company called Rezvi & Brothers. The company was known as Arabic Group. However, in 1999, the name was changed to Walton Group. Walton now has a huge empire by first importing electronics products and later manufacturing them in the country.

His children have maintained this electronic empire. Apart from five sons SM Nurul Alam, SM Shamsul Alam, SM Ashraful Alam, SM Mahbubul Alam and SM Rezaul Alam, three grandchildren SM Manjurul Alam, Tahmina Afroz and Raisa Sigma are involved in the business.

Not only engaged in private business, late SM Nazrul Islam established a Technical School in his village. Apart from this, various institutions including mosques, madrasas, educational institutions, orphanages have been established with his funding. He is also one of the founders of Tangail Central Land Mortgage Bank.
