Mobile operators are also under surveillance for NID data leak
The Election Commission (EC) has kept all the partner services including mobile operators under surveillance in the Telegram data leak. Those found to have leaked information will be blacklisted, so that they cannot work in Bangladesh.
AKM Humayun Kabir, Director General (DG) of the National Identity Registration (NID) Division, said this in response to various questions from journalists on Thursday (October 5).
In response to a question, he said that the mobile company may be giving the number. I am saying, taking 5 types of information from five people. This cycle is an unethical cycle in the world. That's what we want to find out. Who are there in this circle?
Mobile number, spouse name are not supposed to go to partner service. But data leakers are taking them too. When asked about this, he said, the mobile company does not have the number? They are not taking our data? Mobile operators may also be involved. We are investigating that.
In response to the question of how detailed information including the mobile number of the citizen is available, he said that everything is possible in the age of internet. Different people have different information about us. They can do this with data from everywhere. So-so has information. All gathered in one place.
Although the commission is not yet sure how many people's information has been leaked, he said about the involvement of 174 institutions of the NIT service receivers, the services of all those suspected to have leaked the information have been stopped. How many organizations are involved that cannot be said at the moment. It can be said after the investigation. It includes public and private institutions that are providing services to me.
The Director General of NID said that an investigation committee has already been constituted with two system managers for the investigation, and nothing has been said about how many days the report should be submitted. They will give as long as possible. Official inquiry, but where will the office order be at this time?
Meanwhile, claiming that there is no weakness of EC in this accident, he said, EC was not hacked. Because the technical aspect of EC is very strong. They monitor it all the time.
Humayun Kabir said in response to the question whether any major penalty will be taken if someone from the partner service is involved, we cannot completely stop the service as per the contract with them. After investigation, whoever is found guilty will be brought to justice. There is no provision for penalty. What will be fined?
AKM Humayun Kabir said in response to the question about privacy, when you apply to the Public Service Commission, is there privacy or not? When to register Nikah? Then they don't see when giving information in the bank, passport? There is no such thing as privacy in the age of technology. In the age of technology, your privacy, your information becomes public. Search for me on the internet, you will find me. We did not leak. If I had given him your information, he would have told me.
It may be noted that, the personal information of citizens with smart national identity cards of the country has been leaked on a Telegram channel. The Election Commission (EC) officials admitted the matter. According to the agency, the NID server has data of 12 crore citizens. Among them, 5.5 crore citizens have smart NIDs. The matter was discussed last Tuesday. The system management of NID branch of EC does not know who is behind this. However, this information was leaked through only one of the 174 organizations identified as having access to the NID server.
