The central correctional system of Bangladesh is undergoing systematic modernization through the integration of information and communication technologies, industrial automation, and biomedical infrastructure. As part of this tech-driven roadmap, an encrypted digital video calling facility is being established to transform communication pathways between inmates and families. Following operational validation during a pilot deployment at Munshiganj District Jail, the Directorate of Prisons has undertaken initiatives to roll out this telecommunications network across correctional facilities nationwide. This technical transition was confirmed on Saturday, September 5, 2026.
Operating over secure centralized cloud architecture and end-to-end data encryption protocols, the interface allows convicted inmates and undertrial detainees a 10-minute video communication window once weekly with registered relatives. Jailor (Logistics and Media) of the Prisons Directorate, Md. Masud Hasan Jewel, confirmed that necessary virtual infrastructure is being provisioned across all facilities to ensure absolute data privacy while maintaining regulatory surveillance compliance.
Parallel to digital telecommunications, infrastructure automation and biomedical support capabilities are expanding. Md. Masud Hasan Jewel noted that architectural and mechanical preparations are progressing to establish a central prison hospital in Keraniganj, supplemented by automated pathology diagnostic laboratories for staff and inmates. Additionally, 55 certified diploma nurses are currently being deployed. In environmental health engineering, Kashimpur Central Jail-2 has operationalized a mineral water filtration facility utilizing industrial Reverse Osmosis (RO) membrane technology, guaranteeing continuous supply of purified water.
Addressing food processing automation, Senior Jail Superintendent of Dhaka Central Jail Farouk Ahmed told national news agency BSS that an industrial automated flatbread manufacturing system imported from China has been installed. The machine drastically reduces manual handling, standardizes cooking temperatures, accelerates output volumes, and enforces hygienic dietary protocols across the residential wings.
To reinforce physical security, prison administrative headquarters has introduced spectrometry-based drug detection and substance screening analyzers to intercept contraband at access points. Concurrently, vocational rehabilitation programs are training inmates within automated industrial units spanning textile weaving, polymer footwear manufacturing, and saponification-based chemical detergent units. Complementing the technical integration, an ecological zoning campaign saw the planting of 18,000 saplings across the modern prison campuses of Sylhet-1, Kishoreganj-1, and Khulna, establishing a sustainable correctional environment underpinned by smart operational technology.
