JUST launches year-round tree plantation programme to build a greener campus
Jashore University of Science and Technology (JUST) has launched its "Tree Plantation Programme-2026" as part of efforts to combat climate change, protect ecological balance and transform the university into a sustainable green campus. The university also announced that tree plantation and maintenance activities will continue throughout the year.
The programme, organised by the university's Environment Development and Conservation Committee on Monday, was inaugurated by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Iyarul Kabir.
The event began with a colourful procession from the administrative building, which concluded in front of the Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose Academic Building, followed by a discussion session.
Addressing the programme, the Vice-Chancellor said an average person consumes oxygen equivalent to that produced by around 70 trees during a lifetime. He urged everyone to plant at least 100 trees to help maintain ecological balance and repay nature's contribution.
He said the university is focusing not only on planting saplings but also on ensuring their proper care to develop JUST into an ideal green campus. Similar greening initiatives will also be expanded to the university's Jhenaidah campus.
Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof. Sheikh Mahmudul Hasan said tree plantation should not remain a one-day event but continue as a year-round initiative. He expressed hope that sustained efforts would contribute to achieving the government's target of planting 2.5 billion trees over five years.
The programme was formally inaugurated through the plantation of neem saplings near the university's foundation stone, inspired by the "Zia Tree" initiative. Participants later planted fruit, medicinal and ornamental trees across different parts of the campus.
The event was attended by deans, department heads, university officials, faculty members, students and staff.
