Innovative J-Drum Waste Management System Installed at Mirpur STS with DNCC Support
With support from the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), Japan Clean System Co. Ltd. (JCS) has installed its innovative waste compression and storage system, known as the J-Drum, at the Arambagh Secondary Transfer Station (STS) in Mirpur, Dhaka.
The key feature of this waste management system is its efficient use of space at the installation site, while its automated operation enhances both efficiency and safety for waste management workers. The advanced and hygienic storage mechanism also prevents odor, noise, and leakage of liquid waste. Made of stainless steel, the system is highly durable.
Japan Clean System Co. Ltd. has installed more than 1,600 such units worldwide and holds a 60–70 percent market share in Japan.
The new waste management operation officially began on December 23 and is being viewed as a significant step toward improving efficiency and ensuring a healthier environment in Bangladesh’s waste management sector.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by DNCC Administrator Mohammad Ejaz and Chief Waste Management Officer Commodore ABM Shamsul Alam. From JCS, Senior Managing Director Masataka Yamano was present, along with Ms. Izumi Shoji, a senior representative of the JICA Bangladesh Office.
The J-Drum system is designed to address critical issues at STSs, including inefficient conventional waste handling methods, long waiting times for compactor trucks, and environmental problems such as foul odors and liquid waste leakage. By automating waste loading and unloading, the system is expected to improve operational efficiency, reduce physical labor, and ensure optimal land use at the STS.
The installation is part of the “SDGs Business Verification Survey” project, which aims to promote efficient and hygienic waste management systems in Bangladesh, while also exploring the potential for local production to reduce costs and improve accessibility.
Authorities expect the new system to bring significant improvements to the working environment of STS personnel, reduce municipal waste transportation costs, and enhance environmental hygiene in surrounding residential and privately owned areas—marking an important contribution to the modernization of waste management in Bangladesh.
