Reports indicate that SpaceX’s Starshield satellites are transmitting signals on unauthorized frequencies, potentially violating international telecommunication standards, according to NPR. The report was covered by Engadget.

Starshield is a classified satellite network developed by SpaceX, primarily designed to support U.S. national security agencies. According to the company’s website, the network is intended to assist in national security-related operations.

Amateur satellite observer Scott Tilley revealed, “I have identified satellites that are transmitting signals back to Earth on frequencies designated for uplink to the satellites.” He noted that this constitutes a clear violation of rules set by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the United Nations agency responsible for global radio-frequency standards.

“These standards are designed to prevent radio wave interference and command conflicts among satellites,” Tilley said. He explained that nearby satellites could experience radio interference, potentially preventing them from properly receiving commands from Earth or causing them to ignore instructions entirely.

While no major disruptions have been reported so far from SpaceX’s operations, experts warn that these irregular transmissions could complicate satellite communications if issues arise.

Notably, SpaceX signed a $70 million Starshield contract with the U.S. Space Force in 2023 and began building an intelligence satellite network for the National Reconnaissance Office of the Department of Defense in 2024.
