Delivering Digital Weather Forecasts to Farmers
In a major push to integrate real-time digital services and automated financial assistance into Bangladesh's agrarian ecosystem, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has announced the rollout of smart 'Farmer Cards' to 4 million farmers nationwide.
The Prime Minister made these remarks on Tuesday (October 20, 2026) during a public address at the historic Madrasah Ground (Haji Muhammad Mohsin Government High School Ground) in Rajshahi.
At the event, he digitally inaugurated a BDT 12 crore financial incentive scheme by pressing a button on a digital terminal, benefiting 38,970 sugarcane growers across the Rajshahi division, while personally handing over checks to 15 representative farmers.
Highlighting the technological capabilities of the Farmer Card, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman stated, "We believe that if agriculture and farmers survive, Bangladesh survives. We are completing a comprehensive database to deliver Farmer Cards to 4 million small, medium, and landless farmers."
He elaborated that the card links directly to mobile network automated alert systems, delivering precise hyper-local weather predictions—such as incoming rainfall—to help farmers schedule seed sowing and fertilizer application.
The tech-enabled Farmer Card platform will bundle 10 core digital services, including automated crop insurance claims, streamlined digital bank loan disbursements directly through mobile platforms, subvention e-vouchers for seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides for at least one seasonal crop, and remote agritech advisory support.
