- BDT 39 crore invested in advanced technology at National Gastroliver Institute
- Medical assistance for impoverished patients increased from BDT 50,000 to BDT 1,00,000
Bangladesh is on the verge of a major breakthrough in advanced organ transplantation. State Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Dr. M A Muhit, expressed optimism that sustainable liver transplant procedures will become operational in the country by the end of this year or early next year.
On 6 September, Sunday, the State Minister made these remarks in Parliament while responding to a call-attention notice under Rule 71 raised by Rasheda Begum Hira, Member of Parliament from reserved women's seat-3. He informed the House that necessary high-tech equipment worth BDT 39 crore has been procured to establish a permanent liver transplantation facility at the National Gastroliver Institute and Hospital.
Five types of medical devices have already arrived, with ten more arriving by the end of September. Completing the installation of this engineering technology and training the medical team will take around two months.
Addressing the financial strain of complex medical treatments, Dr. M A Muhit stated that the government is actively working to reduce catastrophic health expenditures and out-of-pocket costs for families.
He highlighted that government financial aid for poor patients suffering from critical illnesses has been doubled from BDT 50,000 to BDT 100,000 this year. Through strategic purchasing and Public-Private Partnership (PPP) models, the ministry aims to maximize technology integration so that no citizen dies due to lack of treatment.
