BASIS Ballot Begins: First-Ever Female Chair to Oversee Election Board
On December 4 last year, Mehedi Hasan was appointed as the administrator of the Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS). Four months into his tenure, preparations are now underway for the executive council election for the 2025–27 term. The Ministry of Commerce has formed an election board composed of ministry officials to oversee the process.
For the first time, the BASIS election will be conducted under the leadership of a female chairperson. Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce, Sufia Akter Rumi, has been appointed as the chairperson of the election board. Other members of the committee include Deputy Secretary Sandwip Kumar Sarker and Assistant Trade Adviser Sirajul Islam. This board will soon announce the election schedule and polling date.
In line with the election schedule, an appeal board has also been formed to handle any disputes related to the election. The appeal board will be chaired by another Joint Secretary of the Commerce Ministry, Shayla Yasmin. The members of this board are Deputy Secretary Md. Majedul Islam and Md. Rezaul Karim.
Confirmation of the election board's formation was obtained from an official order issued by the Trade Organization-1 branch of the Bangladesh Secretariat on Wednesday.
