The alumni association of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, BUET Alumni expressed their views on student politics in the campus of BUET. They said BUET is improving in global rankings, and may emerge as one of the leading institutions in the world, if an apolitical environment is maintained here. BUET Alumni stand for fair politics. However, what is currently going on in the name of student politics, is the manifestation or renaming of non-politics.

BUET Alumni conveyed this information in a statement signed by the President of the organization Professor Dr. Ainun Nishat and General Secretary Engineer Mahtab Uddin. The statement issued on Friday, April 5, informed that a joint emergency meeting was held on Wednesday, April 3, to address the crisis and uncertainty arising from the recent untoward incident in BUET. A detailed discussion was held in the meeting under the leadership of President of BUET Alumni Prof. Dr. Ainun Nishat, President and General Secretary of BUET Alumni Board of Trustees and BUET Residential Hall Alumni Association along with distinguished alumni. All the members present in the meeting expressed deep concern and anxiety in this undesirable and sad situation. Besides, some decisions were taken after the discussion regarding the overall teacher-student relationship and the quality of education of BUET with the current situation.

Firstly, BUET Alumni feels that the Vice-Chancellor and the Syndicate have full responsibility as per the existing law for the management of the University.

Second, the events that happened a few days ago are unintended. This meeting is expressing an opinion in favor of fair politics. However, what is currently going on in the name of student politics, is the manifestation or renaming of non-politics.

Thirdly, the role of BUET Alumni in protecting the environment of the University and upholding the quality of education is undeniable and for this purpose they are always committed to perform their duties simultaneously with the authorities.

Fourthly, the education program of BUET has not been disturbed in the last five years and has been conducted in an orderly manner. This consistent success is evidenced by the progression of prestigious achievements and recognition of students in the field of research at national and international level. No one can wish for this environment to be disturbed.

BUET Alumni wish to express their optimism through this meeting that the determination and ambition of BUET should not go astray in the future.

Fifthly, BUET has made significant progress in the national and international arena in education and research. And has been steadily improving in global rankings. With continuous efforts and maintaining a conducive learning environment BUET can further enhance its global reputation and emerge as a leading institution in the world, provided a politicized environment is maintained.

Sixth, BUET graduates are playing significant roles in the workplace at home and abroad. They have been playing an important role in the infrastructure and economic development of the country through professional assistance in numerous large projects including Padma Bridge, Bangabandhu Tunnel, Metrorail, new airport, seaport and so on. Keeping out of political activities, the institution is working tirelessly to build a smart Bangladesh with the aim of academic excellence and national progress by creating an environment of peaceful co-existence among its teachers, students and staff.

Seventh, BUET has historically been proven and recognized as an institution of high -quality technical education.

BUET alumni believe the institution is not a breeding ground for militancy. If there is even the slightest hint or apprehension in this regard, the university authorities and the government will surely suppress it with a strong hand.

Eighth, it is the university's responsibility to ensure the safety of students. The BUET Alumni specifically requests the University authorities to take the matter seriously into account of the insecurity expressed repeatedly by the common students in the prevailing situation.

Again, BUET alumni believe that this recent crisis will be resolved quickly. As in the past, the mutual respect, harmony and camaraderie of the students, administration and teachers of this institution will always be awake and all concerned will be committed to uphold the glory and reputation of this institution.
