- A team of over 40 students from BUET, CUET, DU, and CU collaborated on the project
After over two years of relentless effort by a group of passionate students from BUET, CUET, the University of Dhaka, and the University of Chittagong, the feature film 'Onyapata' is set to release on October 23. Correspondent sources reported that without any major production house or corporate investor, the young creators funded the entire project independently using tuition savings and pocket money. Relevant authorities stated that the film beautifully captures the struggles of university admission tests, middle-class constraints, and youthful aspirations.
The 1-hour 40-minute film features six original tracks and an immersive background score. In its first phase, the movie will screen across 10 prominent theaters, including Star Cineplex (Sony Square), Lion Cinemas, Shyamali Cinema, Star Cineplex (Bali Arcade), Sugandha Cineplex, K-Screen, Grand River View, Momo In Cineplex, Cinescope, and Swapneel Cineplex. What began as a small venture among six friends has now transformed into a robust team of over 40 members handling both on-screen and technical roles.
Directed and scripted by CUET architecture student Md. Shahezahan Anny, the project followed three years of dedicated film studies under the guidance of filmmaker Amitabh Reza. Producer and assistant director Angkon Dey Animesh mentioned that initial industry inexperience and financial hurdles, including fraud, posed severe challenges before reaching the big screen. Co-producer and BUET student Abtahi Shams described the journey as a dream come true, reflecting collective dedication and hard work.
Lead actors Shahria Shakil and Protyasha Pal expressed high optimism about the film, hoping audiences will embrace this fresh cinematic narrative. The technical crew features Indra Nil for art direction, Ibrahim Bin Ansari for cinematography, Fahrin Taszim Manon for music direction, and Ainan for background scoring. Depicting the intense struggle, financial distress, and emotional turns of a middle-class student amidst admission coaching madness, 'Onyapata' aims to resonate deeply with viewers on the big screen.
