Volkswagen Approves Major Restructuring, Plans 50,000 Job Cuts
German multinational automaker Volkswagen has approved the biggest strategic restructuring plan in its history. Under the ambitious plan, titled ‘Future Plan 2030’, the company has confirmed plans to cut around 50,000 jobs across various levels of its operations and management worldwide.
The global automotive giant said the drastic move is aimed at ensuring its survival amid intense competition in the global market, changing demand, and the rapid technological transformation of the automobile industry. The main financial target of the restructuring is to raise the operating profit margin to 9 percent by 2030.
Factory Restructuring and Excess Production Capacity
Alongside workforce reductions, Volkswagen is reassessing its production capacity and factory efficiency in Europe. The company currently has the capacity to produce more than 500,000 additional vehicles annually compared with demand in the European market, creating a major business risk. To address the situation, Volkswagen has begun reconsidering the future of its factories in Emden, Zwickau, Hanover, and Neckarsulm, Germany.
The company said it will review whether these factories can be repurposed for alternative uses or restructured, with final decisions expected by June 2027.
Halving Car Models and Cutting Brands
As part of its cost-cutting efforts and plans to simplify production, Volkswagen has decided to reduce the number of car models available in the market by 50 percent. At the same time, the overall complexity of its product offering will be reduced by 75 percent. In other words, production of models that fail to generate the expected market response will be discontinued.
According to various sources, Volkswagen Group may announce the discontinuation of its popular Spanish automobile brand ‘SEAT’. However, SEAT’s independent premium brand ‘CUPRA’ will continue to operate as before. Volkswagen aims to regain its position in the global market by focusing on a select number of successful models and producing them on a large scale.
