Twelve-year-old Shabana is in urgent need of complex surgery after being diagnosed with a rare vascular abnormality on the right side of her face, while her financially struggling family is unable to bear the cost of treatment.

According to her medical records, the condition has been identified as a “maxillofacial soft tissue lesion/hemangioma—a vascular malformation or tumor of blood vessels.”

A CT angiogram conducted at the Department of Radiology & Imaging of Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) found a mass measuring approximately 7.0 × 8.13 × 3.30 cm. The lesion extends from the right cheek and gingivobuccal mucosa toward the right lip and infratemporal fossa.

The report also found that the facial artery enters the tumor and supplies it.

Doctors from the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery team have advised urgent and complex surgery to prevent further facial deformity and reduce the risk of potentially severe bleeding.

The estimated initial cost of surgery and medicines is around Tk 132,000, while additional expenses are expected for follow-up treatment and rehabilitation.

Shabana’s family lives in Pargendaria, near Keraniganj Park, in South Keraniganj, Dhaka.

Her father, Shahed Mallik, was previously working as an auto-rickshaw driver. He recently became paralysed following a brain stroke and is now unable to earn.

Her mother, Nazma Akter, works as a domestic worker to support the family. The four-member family survives on a monthly income of only around Tk 6,000.

As Shabana’s facial swelling continues to increase, her mother has appealed to compassionate people for financial assistance.

”The swelling on my daughter's face is worsening. If kind-hearted people in society don't show some mercy, my daughter may not survive.”

The family is seeking financial support from individuals and organisations to arrange Shabana’s urgent surgery and subsequent treatment.
