The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has officially launched the online income tax return (e-Return) submission service for individual taxpayers for the assessment year 2026–2027. In a press release issued on Tuesday (July 21), the NBR stated that this initiative aims to make tax services simpler, faster, and more transparent.

Taxpayers can now submit their returns and pay their taxes from home via the web portal www.etaxnbr.gov.bd using online bank transfers, debit/credit cards, or Mobile Financial Services (MFS) like bKash, Rocket, and Nagad. Upon successful submission, taxpayers can instantly download their acknowledgment receipts and income tax certificates. For assistance, taxpayers can call the NBR call center (09643717171) on working days during office hours.

5% Incentive for Early Submission:
To encourage timely compliance, NBR announced a new incentive for the 2026–2027 tax year. Taxpayers filing their returns between July and September will receive up to a 5% incentive on their net payable tax (capped at BDT 25,000). Submissions made after September will not be eligible for this rebate, while filings after December will incur financial penalties/additional taxes.

Mandatory Online Filing Exceptions:
Under a special order by the NBR, filing e-Returns is mandatory for all general individual taxpayers. However, paper submissions are permitted for the following categories:

  • Senior citizens aged 65 or above
  • Persons with physical disabilities/special needs (certified)
  • Non-resident Bangladeshis residing abroad
  • Legal representatives of deceased taxpayers
  • Foreign nationals working in Bangladesh

Additionally, if any general taxpayer faces technical complexities during system registration, they may file a manual paper return upon obtaining approval from the respective Additional or Joint Commissioner of Taxes.

Since its launch in 2021, the e-Return system has gained wide popularity. A record 4.7 million individual taxpayers successfully submitted their returns online during the 2025–2026 assessment year.
